The film tells about the poor villagers Mankonal, very much dependent on agriculture. They prefer cultivating for the Zamindar rather than slog for the upcoming quary. The story revolves round Bhasara, the village chief, his small family including his wife Laxmi, son Shibu and daughters Rangi and Bengi.
The village is in the process of electing a new chief and to ensure that he is elected, the Zamindar offers money to the villagers for their votes. This tempts Bhasara to adopt Anath, a beggar, who is suffering from tuberculosis, Bhasara promises the beggar that he will get him cured in exchange of his vote money. The drama changes its course when the sheltered beggar shows sign of deterioration. While taking him to hospital through the hilly terrain, they get caught in a dynamite explosion
