ABOUT US

M. Arun's Thamizh Studio has revolutionized the discourse on Tamil cinema and its aesthetics. Similarly, his online Tamil cinema journal Pesamozhi, initially a monthly and now published as a bi-monthly, has created a space for iconic writers, like the historian S. Theodore Baskaran and Tamil cinema's prolific scholar Yamuna Rajendran, and filmmaker/critic Amshan Kumar, to regularly write and engage with various aspects of Tamil cinema and push the limits as far as expectation regarding its future is concerned. Thamizh Studio has helped revitalize the debates on contemporary issues surrounding Tamil cinema like casteism and corporatization. Padachrul, the serious Tamil cinema journal from Thamizh Studio, has just successfully celebrated its anniversary.

Furthermore, Marudu Trotsky, arguably, the greatest living painter and multimedia artist in Tamilnadu who is also a designer and art director, has written his very precious memoir in Pesamozhi-an achievement for Thamizh Studio and its commitment towards quality as Marudu is a busy artist and it is not easy to get him to write on a regular basis for a film journal.

Arun's background as a successful infotech engineer who pursued his dreams of filmmaking by going to London for graduate study in cinema has helped him create a space for good cinema in Chennai. He has remained truthful to the cause of good cinema by strongly criticizing anything less than what he considers the best, often provoking strong responses because of his subjectivity and leading to productive debates.

It is a great honor for Thamizh Studio that the iconic documentarian Anand Patwardhan accepted the coveted Lenin Award, installed by Arun in the name of Tamil cinema's famous editor/filmmaker B. Lenin. As a scholar, researcher, editor, blogger, and critic of Tamil cinema, Arun has dedicated himself and has been successful in creating a multi-vocal space for discussing Tamil cinema, particularly for short films and documentaries, as exemplified by his book Naadu Kadandha Kalai (Meipporul 2014). His publishing house has brought out books on Sri Lankan Conflict and Cinema by the Yamuna Rajendran, and a book on cinematography during this era of the digital by the famous cinematographer Vijay Armstrong, and director Mysskin's screenplays and his profound meditations on creativity in the context of his landmark film Onaayum Aattukkuttiyum (Wolf and the lamb, 2013).

Arun's passion for cinema, thus, is matched only by his painstaking efforts and unmatched energy.
